Skibladner — a time journey on Mjøsa's proud paddle steamer

Explore Inland with Mjøsa's white swan, Skibladner. A remarkable journey just a short walk from Hovdetun Hostel.

A living journey through history

Skibladner, the world's oldest paddle steamer in scheduled traffic, was built between 1854 and 1856 at Motala Verksted in Sweden — and on 2 August 1856 it had its maiden voyage at Mjøsa. Originally designed for both passenger and freight traffic, the ship has since meant a lot for communication and business along Mjøsa.

An adventure at Mjøsa

When you sail with Skibladner you get more than just transportation — it's a journey through nature, culture and historical charm. The ship sails routes between cities such as Eidsvoll, Hamar, Gjøvik, Moelv and Lillehammer, and offers many opportunities for round trips that start and end in the same place. On board there is the restaurant Første Plads Madsalon, a lounge with historical character where you can enjoy traditional dishes such as “salmon & strawberries” in a venerable setting. The nave has been restored and maintained so that much of the original expression from the 1880s is preserved.
